Football: Everton probe Jordan Pickford bar brawl allegations

LONDON (AFP) - England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is under investigation by his club Everton about his alleged involvement in a brawl in Sunderland on Sunday (March 31).
The 25-year-old - who shone at last year's World Cup - is believed to have reacted when revellers in a bar directed derogatory remarks at his fiancee Megan, who recently had their first child Arlo.
A video has spread on social media in which onlookers can be heard shouting "Jordan" as a fight breaks out before the man, believed to be Pickford, is dragged away.
Pickford had played in Everton's 2-0 away win over West Ham on Saturday before spending a day off in his home city.
"The club has been made aware of an alleged incident involving one of our players and we are looking into the matter," the Premier League club said.
Pickford came through the system at Sunderland but joined Everton for an initial £25 million (S$44.2 million) when they were relegated from the Premier League in June 2017.
He made his England debut five months later and was Gareth Southgate's first choice at the World Cup and was instrumental in their surprise run to the semi-finals.
He saved a spot-kick in the penalty shootout victory over Colombia in their last-16 clash and was man of the match in England's 2-0 win over Sweden in the quarter-finals.

Alvarez gets the decision in unification bout

LAS VEGAS • Saul "Canelo" Alvarez won a close, often tense but uncontroversial decision over Daniel Jacobs in their hotly anticipated middleweight championship unification fight on Saturday night.
Ringside judges Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld turned in cards of 115-113, while Glenn Feldman scored it 116-112 as Alvarez (52-1-2 with 35 knockouts), unified boxing's 160-pound (72kg) division.
The Mexican added the American's International Boxing Federation belt to the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council straps that he won from Gennady Golovkin last September.
Alvarez has now all but cleaned it out - four years after capturing the lineal title from Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto to establish a foothold in the division.
After his second win since signing a five-year, 11-fight contract worth a minimum of US$365 million (S$497.4 million) with the streaming service DAZN, he told reporters: "It was just what we thought because of the style of fight he brings, but we did our job.
"I'm just looking for the biggest challenge. That's why I'm here. That's what I was born for, to fight, to defend what's mine. I'll fight anyone."
Jacobs (35-3 with 29 knockouts), who entered the bout as a 6-1 underdog with bookmakers, had trouble finding the elusive Alvarez for long stretches of the fight before a rollicking Cinco de Mayo weekend crowd at the T-Mobile Arena.
Although he tweaked his tactics to come on strong in the second half, landing 131 of 649 punches (20 per cent), Alvarez, whose patience, poise and exquisite technique were on full display for 12 rounds, still connected with 118 of 466 of his punches (40 per cent).
Admitting his opponent was "a tremendous champion", Jacobs, whose "Miracle Man" nickname stems from having overcome bone cancer, said: "I tip my hat to him (Alvarez). I gave my all out there."
The day had started with a hint of controversy when Jacobs came in 3.7lb over the contracted rehydration limit of 170. But, though the cost of the blown weight check was steep, he was content to forfeit nearly US$1 million of his US$10 million guarantee for the best chance of winning.
Having now claimed three of the four major belts at 160lb, Alvarez, who earned US$35 million on the night, may target World Boxing Organisation title-holder Demetrius Andrade for his customary September fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend to become an undisputed champion.
But a third fight with Golovkin, the first ending in a controversial draw, which was further marred by Alvarez's positive drug test in the lead-up to the rematch, would be a bigger hit commercially.
The Kazakh, who is also signed with DAZN and was at ringside, tried to talk up a third instalment.
He slagged off the fight, during which neither man was knocked down or in serious trouble, as "boring" and "just a sparring match".
Golovkin, whom many observers believed won their first fight in September 2017, tweeted: "They should give more to the audience, the boxing community. I didn't see any emotions. I didn't see anything special."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United's Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba struck first-half goals to claim a 2-0 win that dumped FA Cup holders Chelsea out of the competition and secured a place in the quarter-finals in an intense tie at Stamford Bridge on Monday (Feb 18).
It was a measure of revenge for United, resurgent under interim coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who lost to Chelsea in last May's Wembley final under their former boss Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea's fragile defence was split with crosses from either flank. Paul Pogba supplied the first in the 31st minute after a fast move down the left and Herrera ghosted into the box to nod the ball down past stranded goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Until that moment a lively game had been evenly poised, with a host of chances at either end. Chelsea's hopes were crushed just before halftime, however, in a speedy United counter down the right, with Rashford crossing for Pogba to head powerfully home between defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger.
The fifth round defeat piled more pressure on Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, whose side were hammered 6-0 last week in the Premier League by United's neighbours Manchester City.
Chants of "sacked in the morning" broke out in the second half as the hosts failed to break United down. There were boos from some home supporters at the final whistle while Solskjaer celebrated with his players in front of the travelling fans.

Football: Liverpool's Milner available for Wolves trip

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Liverpool midfielder James Milner is back in training and will be available for Friday's (Dec 21) Premier League trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers after shaking off a hamstring issue.
Milner picked up the injury towards the end of Liverpool's 1-0 Champions League win over Italian side Napoli last week and the 32-year-old sat out of last Sunday's 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Anfield as a precaution.
"It was the right thing not to risk me at the weekend, so hopefully I'll be fine for the next game," Milner told the club's website ahead of the trip to Molineux Stadium.
"I just had a bit of a sensation in my hamstring at the end of the Napoli game and made the decision, the manager made the decision (to miss Sunday's game)."
Leaders Liverpool, who have 45 points from 17 games, are looking to extend their unbeaten start to the campaign but manager Juergen Klopp is aware of the threat that promoted Wolves could pose.
The seventh-placed side have drawn with champions Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal and beat Chelsea earlier this season, playing a fluid style under Portuguese manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
"We have to be really strong, we know that. It will be a really interesting game," Klopp said.
"They have changed system a few times, so that will be interesting as well, how they do that. We have to be ready for everything."
Wolves will be without striker Diogo Jota, who suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend.
"For tomorrow, Jota is impossible. Hopefully he'll be back soon," the Wolves manager told reporters.
Wolves are looking for a victory that would provisionally lift them into sixth place above Manchester United, who visit Cardiff City on Saturday.

Singapore's Akbar is best coach in I-League
Singaporean Akbar Nawas has been named the I-League's best coach after leading Chennai City to their first title earlier this month.
The Indian team swept seven out of 10 categories at the I-League awards and trophy presentation ceremony at the Taj Corramandel in Chennai on Wednesday.
Akbar received the Syed Abdul Rahim Best Coach Award, while Chennai's Spanish imports Roberto Eslava, Nestor Jesus Gordillo and Pedro Manzi were named the league's best defender, midfielder and forward respectively.
With 21 goals, Manzi shared the top-scorer award with Churchill Brothers' Willis Plaza. He was also voted the league's best player.
Akbar and his assistant K. Balagumaran have been credited for transforming Chennai from relegation stragglers last season to champions this year as they reaped the rewards for preaching and practising an attacking style of football.
Akbar, 43, told The Straits Times: "It has been a great season to remember, and the award was made possible because of my players, who did their job on the pitch to win the league.
"After finishing second with Tampines Rovers in Singapore (2016) and Global Cebu in the Philippines (2017), there is huge personal satisfaction in winning the league title with Chennai in India and helping them reach the AFC Champions League qualifiers."

Chennai also received a congratulatory message from Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
In a letter addressed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), he wrote: "I was delighted to hear that Chennai City FC have been crowned 2018-19 I-League champions. This is, no doubt, the result of effort and hard work, and everybody involved can be proud of this great achievement. I encourage them to continue working with determination and motivation.
"On behalf of the entire football community, I take this opportunity to thank Chennai City FC and your federation for helping spread the positive message of football and foster the practice of this beautiful game that unites us all."
The achievement of Akbar and Balagumaran has not gone unnoticed by the AIFF and the duo are said to be on its radar for the vacant India national coach position.
Akbar admitted that he has been approached by other teams, but he is keen to take Chennai forward in the new 20-team Indian Football League next season that will unify the I-League and the Indian Super League.
"I have received offers and I'm in discussions with my club owner about the future," said Akbar.

Football: Arsenal edge past 10-man Watford, move into top four

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal moved into the Premier League top four, but made hard work of seeing off 10-man Watford 1-0 thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's fortunate early opener on Monday (April 15).
Aubameyang profited from an error by Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster as he blasted an attempted clearance in off the Gabon international.
Watford captain Troy Deeney was then shown a straight red card after just 11 minutes, but the Gunners failed to make the most of their man advantage and were fortunate as the hosts twice hit the woodwork.
However, Unai Emery's men held out for a first clean sheet away from home in the Premier League this season to move ahead of Chelsea on goal difference into fourth.
Arsenal also edge to within a point of north London rivals Tottenham and two clear of Manchester United in the four-way battle for the two remaining Champions League places behind Liverpool and Manchester City.
FA Cup finalists Watford were already shorn of the man who helped book their place at Wembley against Manchester City next month as Gerard Deulofeu missed out through injury and Javi Gracia's side did themselves little favours early on.
Firstly, Foster dallied as Aubameyang closed in to concede a comical opener.
And within seconds, Deeney was punished for an elbow into the face of Lucas Torreira.
Arsenal now have just three days to prepare for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final away to Napoli and should have ensured an easier finish.
Aubameyang saw another effort deflected behind at the end of a sweeping counter-attack, while Foster also turned over a fierce Alex Iwobi shot.
However, the 10 men were still causing problems to a defensively vulnerable Arsenal at the other end.
Craig Cathcart's shot was turned onto the post by Bernd Leno and the German goalkeeper was also a full stretch to turn an Etienne Capoue free-kick behind.
Emery introduced Mesut Ozil at half-time in an attempt to improve Arsenal's final ball with so much space to counter-attack into, but to little avail.
Iwobi looked to have provided the perfect cross to pick out Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but Foster made amends for his earlier error by spreading himself to make a brilliant save from the Armenian.
Arsenal's terrible away record is why they face such a tight battle to secure Champions League football next season.
And they could have thrown just a second away league win since November away as Adam Masina crashed a 25-yard strike off the crossbar before Andre Gray miscontrolled Daryl Janmaat's pass when clean through on Leno.
Gray was then denied by a last-ditch challenge from Ainsley Maitland-Niles after rounding Leno, but without the firepower of Deulofeu and Deeney, Watford's brave effort fell just short.
