Football: Spain make it three wins out of three with Euro 2020 victory over Faroes

TORSHAVN, Faroe Islands (REUTERS) - Spain eased to their third win from three games in their Euro 2020 qualification campaign by beating the Faroe Islands 4-1 away on Friday (June 7) to stay two points clear at the top of Group F.
Captain Sergio Ramos put the visitors ahead from a corner in the sixth minute and Jesus Navas slammed the ball into the far corner in the 19th for Spain, who were still without coach Luis Enrique, who is on extended leave for personal reasons.
The unfancied Faroes struck back on the half-hour mark though when Klaemint Olsen rose to flick a header from defender Odmar Faero into the net on the volley, although Spain restored their two-goal advantage four minutes later.
Midfielder Isco fired a shot against the post which bounced off goalkeeper Teitur Gestsson and trickled into the net to be given as an own goal, while Spain left back Jose Gaya scored the best goal of the game in the 71st minute with a classy chip.
Spain top the group with nine points from three games while Sweden are second with seven after a straightforward 3-0 win at home to Malta.
Romania are third on four points after snatching a 2-2 draw at Norway after trailing by two goals.
Striker Robin Quaison put Sweden ahead against Malta in the second minute by following up on the rebound and Viktor Claesson increased their lead early in the second half with a lofted finish, set-up by a classy backflicked pass from Marcus Berg.
Teenage forward Alexander Isak added the third goal late on after coming on as a substitute.
Norway had salvaged a point in an epic 3-3 draw in their last outing against Sweden with a last-gasp goal but they were the victims of a stoppage-time equaliser against Romania.
Tarik Elyounoussi gave the hosts the lead in the 56th minute and former Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard looked to have sealed Norway's first victory of the campaign when he struck in the 70th.
Yet visiting striker Claudiu Keseru had other ideas, pulling a goal back in the 77th minute with a header from close range before completing the comeback in stoppage time with another strike.

Football: MLS champions Atlanta name former Dutch star Frank de Boer as coach

NEW YORK (AFP) - Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Atlanta United have named retired Dutch star Frank de Boer as the club's new coach, replacing Argentinian Gerardo Martino.
The 48-year-old Dutchman guided his former club Ajax to four consecutive Dutch league titles but less successful stints followed at Inter Milan and England's Crystal Palace.
In announcing last October that he was leaving Atlanta, Martino said the grind of a club campaign kept him from going home as much as he wanted. But he has been linked to the Mexican national team.
Former defender de Boer takes over on Jan 1 with Atlanta set for a pre-season match on Jan 14 and a Concacaf Champions League campaign that begins in February.
"The club's sportive ambitions, as set out in a long-term strategy to be the best in class, clearly fits my personal ambitions," he said.
"I would like to build on the current success to develop a secure, solid foundation for the club at the top of MLS and beyond."
De Boer lasted only 85 days at Inter after losing four of five Serie A matches and was gone after 10 weeks from Crystal Palace after a 0-4 start in the 2017-18 Premier League.
"Frank de Boer has a distinguished background, both as manager and player, and we're ecstatic to welcome him to our club," Atlanta president Darren Eales said.
Atlanta secured their first MLS Cup in just their second season when they beat Portland Timbers 2-0 earlier this month.

Sane sad for Schalke in comeback victory

Sane sad for Schalke in comeback victory

GELSENKIRCHEN • If Pep Guardiola learnt anything from a chaotic night in Germany's industrial heartland, it was that you cannot keep a good narrative down.
Leroy Sane had been left on the bench for his return to Schalke and it did not seem an unreasonable decision given the manner that Manchester City went about their business clinically, taking the lead through Sergio Aguero.
However, the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie turned on its head after the video assistant referee (VAR) twice intervened to award spot kicks, which were converted by Schalke midfielder Nabil Bentaleb.
Nicolas Otamendi was then sent off after the break and City's away record in Champions League knockout games going into this fixture, with five of their last eight matches ending in defeat, was under scrutiny again.
But Sane's rocket of a free kick with five minutes left and Raheem Sterling's route-one goal in added time spared City's blushes, giving Guardiola's men a 3-2 victory at the Veltins Arena on Wednesday.
Afterwards, the former Schalke academy product admitted to feeling "sorry" for his equaliser.
He said: "I couldn't really celebrate. Of course I was pleased for my team, but to score a goal like that against my former love...
"It was very emotional for me to be back in my home town... At the end, we scored three goals away, that's the most important thing."
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand felt Guardiola did not err in naming Sane only as a substitute as the Germany winger has "the end product and is a killer in that sense of the game".
He told BT Sport: "He comes on, makes a huge impact and that's what defines great teams as well. He just looks like poetry in motion the way he plays. He glides across the pitch."

  • Leroy Sane has scored three goals and set up five in his last seven appearances for Manchester City in all competitions.

However, Guardiola conceded that City could not continue to rely on individual brilliance to bail them out of trouble as "it is not enough at this level".
Calling on his side to stop giving opponents "options to be in the game" - Schalke took full advantage of their only two shots on target - he said: "We have some work to do. To go away and score three goals, I am delighted, but... we have to improve on that (defending)".
The Spaniard also backed the VAR despite a delay of over three minutes, after a technical error meant referee Carlos del Cerro Grande could not check Otamendi's handball for Schalke's first penalty.
He added: "The VAR needs time, they will improve, the screen was broken but, next time, they will be better.
"I support the technology because they (the match officials) need the help."
The Premier League champions are the only English club still capable of securing an unprecedented quadruple this season.
They will also be without Fernandinho, who was booked for the second spot kick, for the return leg at the Etihad on March 12.

Football: Neymar hints at joining Real Madrid

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar on Sunday (March 3) left the door open for a potential move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The world's most expensive footballer is currently recovering from a foot injury which he suffered on January 23 and has been linked with a return to La Liga ever since he joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017.
"In the future, everything is possible," he told Brazilian television channel Globo.
"I'm not saying I'm going to Real Madrid, calm down. Everybody knows I have already accomplished my dream which was (playing for) Barcelona.
"Real Madrid is one of the biggest teams in the world, every player perceived to have an interest in the club wants to play for them. Right now I'm very happy in Paris." Neymar said Barcelona's Lionel Messi had sent him his regards after hearing about the Brazilian's most recent injury.
"At the time I needed support the most, from people and the team, the best in the world came to me to say 'I'm here to help you'," Neymar said.
The 27-year-old said PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe will be one of the world's greatest ever players despite the pair both eyeing the biggest individual prizes in the sport.

"He's going to become one of the best players in the history of football and I'm trying to help him as best as possible. We have the same friendship as I had with Lionel, even competing for the Ballon d'Or," he said.
Neymar will miss Wednesday's Champions League last-16 return leg against Manchester United with the metatarsal problem he suffered six weeks ago.
He was sidelined for three months of last season with the same issue, returning just in time to play at the World Cup.
PSG anticipate he will be back in time for a potential European quarter-final in April.

Jubilant Liverpool keen to keep Klopp beyond 2022

Jubilant Liverpool keen to keep Klopp beyond 2022

LONDON • Liverpool fans perched on rooftops, speed cameras and bus shelters on Sunday afternoon. Others clambered up lamp posts and sat astride traffic lights.
The open-top bus transporting Jurgen Klopp's squad was reduced to a crawl by the number of fans turning out to celebrate their sixth Champions League/European Cup triumph.
By the time it reached its destination, almost four hours had passed, and Merseyside police estimated that up to 750,000 people had lined the streets.
The sight of families, young and old, standing shoulder to shoulder was a vision to behold and highlighted how the supporters have been unified behind an institution that was idling before Klopp's arrival in October 2015.
And that is why the club's owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), wants him to oversee the construction of a dynasty at Anfield by staying on as the manager beyond the three years remaining on his annual £7 million (S$12.1 million) contract.
The German spent seven years each in his previous positions with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, but FSG feels he can break new ground.
There is a belief that a young squad are primed to challenge consistently for the top honours under Klopp - who received the loudest cheers as he hoisted the trophy into the air - so the club's hierarchy is keen to tie him down.
Liverpool also want to ward off rival interest, with Bayern Munich great Franz Beckenbauer telling German daily Bild yesterday the 51-year-old was "one of the best coaches in the world" and would be a "good fit" at the Allianz Arena.
Reds chairman Tom Werner said: "When the players threw Jurgen in the air after our victory, they were acknowledging what all Liverpool fans know - he is beloved by all who appreciate football.
"Jurgen is a brilliant coach, but just as importantly, he is a humble and caring man."
Of the turnout for their 12.8km victory parade, Klopp joked: "I don't know exactly how many people live in Liverpool but it does not look like there is a lot (of) space for fans of other clubs.
"It is incredible. If you are a young kid, which do you support?
"There are not a lot of opportunities or options other than Liverpool.
"You see in the eyes how much it means. It is really intense."
