Football: Atletico the greatest threat to Barca's La Liga hopes, says Valverde

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has admitted he views Atletico Madrid as a greater threat to his side winning La Liga this season than Real Madrid.
Atletico, who play Getafe on Saturday (Jan 26), sit five points behind Barca in the table while Real's stuttering campaign means they are already 10 adrift of the league leaders.
Real have shown signs of a return to form in recent weeks, having won four out of their last five matches, including an impressive victory over Sevilla.
Sevilla sit third, ahead of Real on goal difference, but after playing a game more.
"We look more at who is immediately behind us," Valverde said at a press conference on Saturday.
"I value both Atletico and Real Madrid very highly because one is a great team and the other never gives up. But you have to look more at the one that is five points behind."
Barcelona have made four signings in the January transfer window, their latest move a €75 million (S$115 million) deal for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who will arrive in July.
De Jong has said he spoke to both Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola and Paris Saint-Germain's Thomas Tuchel before making his decision, but not Valverde.
"You cannot talk to a player who has a contract elsewhere and it's not my way of doing things," Valverde said. "I have nothing more to say about it."
Kevin Prince-Boateng has also arrived from Sassuolo and Jeison Murillo from Valencia, each on loan, while Jean-Clair Todibo has agreed to join from Toulouse next summer.
Asked if he has the final say on signings, Valverde said: "I talk to the technical committee and we have normal conversations. I never speak in absolute terms, that someone has to come, no ifs or buts. We speak generally and talk about options."

DENIS SUAREZ, MALCOM COULD LEAVE

Valverde has admitted the club could allow fringe players to leave this month, with Denis Suarez and Malcom both linked with moves away.
Suarez was dropped from the squad to face Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday to make way for Boateng, while Malcom started, but struggled, and came off after 63 minutes. Both are in the squad to face Girona.

"He has many qualities," said Valverde, speaking about Malcom.
"He is direct and can make something happen.
"He has to be more aggressive and have more consistency in his game. Nothing is missing but there are others who play and you have to choose between them all."
Barcelona's game against Girona at Montilivi on Sunday had been the fixture identified by La Liga to be played in the United States.
The plan, however, fell through due to a lack of support from governing bodies like Fifa and the Spanish FA (RFEF), although both Barca and Girona had supported the idea.
"I saw it as a distant option," Valverde said.
"They had to fulfil conditions for it to be played in Miami that in the end were not fulfilled.
"We were willing to play where they said, it was not important to us and I didn't lose sleep about it. We will see in the future."
Ousmane Dembele will miss the game this weekend with an ankle injury while Samuel Umtiti is still recovering from a knee problem. Rafinha is also out with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Football: Neymar celebrates birthday in style and on crutches

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar celebrated his 27th birthday with a glittering party in Paris on Monday (Feb 4) evening joined by family, Paris Saint-Germain teammates and a smattering of celebrities.
DJ Bob Sinclair, Brazilian singer Wesley Safadao and world surf champion Gabriel Medina were among the 200 guests at the fashionable Pavillon Gabriel near the Champs-Elysees.
The world's most expensive footballer, nursing a right foot injury, greeted his guests leaning on distinctive red crutches in keeping with the colour theme for the 'Nuit Rouge (Red Night)'.
Among his club colleagues in attendance were captain Thiago Silva and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
Neymar, who turns 27 on Tuesday, will miss both legs of Paris Saint-Germain's upcoming Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United with a metatarsal injury suffered last month.
Neymar is in good company when it comes to famous footballers sharing his big day, as Cristiano Ronaldo turns 34 on Tuesday, Carlos Tevez is 35, and former Romania great Gheorghe Hagi is 54.

Football: Pochettino won't rule out late signings for injury-hit Spurs

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino admits Tottenham's injury woes could force his club to return to the transfer market for the first time in a year.
Pochettino had expected Tottenham would sit out the current transfer period as they budget for the cost of their long-delayed new stadium.
That would make it consecutive windows without a single new player arriving at the north London club, whose last signing was Lucas Moura in January 2018.
But Tottenham, who face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, have been rocked by injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli, with both England stars ruled out until March.
Adding to Pochettino's frustration, Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies suffered injuries in Tottenham's League Cup semi-final defeat at Chelsea on Thursday.
Asked whether there was a chance of making a signing before Thursday's 2300 GMT (7am on Friday, Singapore time) transfer deadline, Pochettino said: "Always, we'll see. Still six days. We are working. We have a few options.
"We'll see if we are capable of delivering, but in the same way of course we have the squad."

Pochettino is looking at both English and overseas players but does not want a repeat of the situation that saw Tottenham defender Juan Foyth omitted from their Champions League group stage squad because there were not enough homegrown players on the list.
"Now we have maybe one space because Mousa Dembele has gone," he added.
"But we need to be careful because for the Champions League I think we are not going to... if it's a player that is not an English player we don't have the space, because it was Juan Foyth (that missed out) and that is so important to be careful about the decision.
"But we are always hoping to try to add quality and try to improve the squad. We are open (to make a move) like always. Different options. In England, outside of England."
Tottenham's problems eased a little on Friday when South Korea were knocked out of the Asian Cup by Qatar, meaning Son Heung-min will be back with Pochettino's side earlier than expected.
But their League Cup exit against Chelsea leaves the club still waiting for their first trophy since 2008.
It was the latest in a growing list of Tottenham flops on the biggest occasions but Pochettino is adamant his team are heading in the right direction.
"We showed in the two legs the right mentality. We competed with all of the circumstances that were not for us, were against us," he said.
"Yesterday after 2-0 the second half and the way we approached it, how we played, how brave we were on the pitch, I'm very confident for the future.
"If football is a fair sport it will reward us at the end of the season but we need to keep fighting. Sunday is the best medicine to feel good again."

Football: Manchester United through as runners-up after limp Champions League defeat to Valencia

VALENCIA, Spain (AFP) - Manchester United squandered the chance to win their Champions League group on Wednesday after a lacklustre display got what it deserved in a 2-1 defeat to Valencia.
Already through to the last 16, Jose Mourinho made eight changes at the Mestalla, including a return for Paul Pogba, but United were largely outplayed by their Spanish opponents, who sit 15th in La Liga.
Carlos Soler's driven shot and a Phil Jones own-goal put Valencia two up early in the second half before United came alive in the final minutes after Marcus Rashford's header gave them brief hope.
Perhaps Mourinho and his players had assumed Juventus would win away at Young Boys but the Italians' surprise 2-1 loss meant United had first place within their grasp.
Instead, they go through as runners-up into Monday's draw for the last 16, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Porto all potential opponents.
Porto would probably be the favoured pick but on this evidence, they might feel the same about United. After all, Valencia also made changes, eight of them, with their fate resigned to dropping into the Europa League.
They had failed to score in six of their last eight Champions League games while poor form in La Liga has their coach Marcelino fighting for his future.
After drawing against Sevilla last weekend, their fans swung white handkerchiefs in the air to demonstrate their dissatisfaction.
Pogba, left out against Arsenal and Fulham, started here but contributed little, save for a glaring miss in the first half. Eric Bailly also came in but his partnership with Jones was rocky all night.
United made Valencia look like world-beaters in the opening 45 minutes. They were slow in possession and just as sluggish out of it. Frustration bubbled and burst, as a handful of tackles flew in and missed.
Valencia were excellent. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Dani Parejo both went close early on before another pinball session in the penalty area saw the ball land at the feet of Soler. He looked up, picked his spot and drove into the far corner.
Michy Batshuayi should have made it two but headed over and Mouctar Diakhaby could have had a penalty when denied a simple finish by the clambering Marouane Fellaini.
United had the occasional opening, the best of them falling to Pogba, who somehow stabbed wide after Fellaini's header offered him a tap-in from two yards. The flag of the assistant referee spared his blushes but replays showed he was onside.
Jones marched off at half-time shaking his head, having berated his midfield for failing to track back, but the interval brought no relief.
Almost as soon as they restarted, Romelu Lukaku misread a Bailly pass. Just as others had before, Bailly threw his arms up in frustration.
Soon after it was two, Soler's pass landing between Sergio Romero and Jones, with Batshuayi on the chase. Jones panicked, met the ball on the slide, and pushed it past his approaching goalkeeper and into his own net.
There were 43 minutes left but a United comeback never looked likely until Rashford, on as a substitute, headed home in the 87th minute. Jesse Lingard had done well to keep the ball alive before Ashley Young supplied the cross.
Juan Mata could even have equalised. Pogba's scooped ball over the top left him alone in front of goal but he missed the ball as he tried to volley on the turn. A point would have been more than United deserved.

You know, I think Barca will be fine. 29 April 2013. By Nicol Hay. Football fans have a curious love for certainties - knowing that this player was definitely better than that one, that one club is clearly bigger than the other - that seems to be a product of the untidy nature of the game itself.
